Districts are facing growing numbers of lawsuits for their failure to prevent the bullying of students. States are passing legislation holding districts accountable for implementing bullying prevention policies and procedures such as “Jeff’s Law” in Florida. But the question remains how do districts address bullying prevention without sacrificing time for teaching academics when research has shown that systemic change must come from the integration of bullying programs into the regular academic curriculum. Longview ISD addressed this challenge by implementing a bullying prevention curriculum, which was integrated into the regular English language arts curriculum with the goal to systematically improve students’ self management skills while simultaneously improving reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing skills.
