The Fine Art of Conversation

blogconversation.jpg

I am sketching in the local coffee shop. Conversations abound. There are few things in this world more uplifting, comforting and exciting than a wonderful, meaningful, heart-warming conversation.

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” Mister (Fred) Rogers

“That is the happiest conversation where there is no competition, no vanity, but a calm, quiet interchange of sentiments.” - Samuel Johnson

Well,

I can honestly say, having lived next door to the man for quite a long time, that Fred Rogers walked the walk and talked the talk. He was an amazing man, different in many ways than most, gentle and kind and thoughtful. And he is right.

Anything that's human IS mentionable, and should be talked about. No matter how uncomfortable it might feel, once out in the light of day, these things can be worked on by more than one soul at a time. Shame, and all her nasty attendants, must scurry far away under the light of open hearts.

I spend inordinate amounts of time listening to people. Perhaps, I seem a bit mad, out of it, as I am taking in all around me.

While walking dogs the other day, I passed two nurses out walking at lunch hour...

"So, I asked her, did she bury him in some clothes? and she answered that, no, he was too little, so they just wrapped him in a blanket..."

I cried the whole way home.
